More on his current location (with maps) HERE!
The following post is about Kurken in the Beta version...
In the last patch,
as Mania helpfully let us know,
core hounds became tamable in the Beta.
And since I've loved the draenei starting zone ever since BC came out it seemed right to go tame the
Kurken. Besides, the only other core hounds easy to get are the
neon green ones in Shadomoon Valley, and I'm not a huge fan of neon green. So it was off to Azuremyst Isle for me. (Maps of Kurken spawn area
here and
here, map of island
here. He repawns after a wait of a few minutes.)
When I got to Kurken's spawning area I found that I wasn't the only one with this idea.
There were three blood elf hunters there already! And luckily I hung back a bit and didn't bounce right in to tame the respawning Kurken, because the third hunter was waiting to tame it. So here I am, sitting and waiting on the next respawn. Now what was cool was that the hunters sent some friendly emotes my way, and they were all chatting - not that I could understand it, since my hunter is a night elf, but I
knew it was hunter shop talk. Which was kind of fun.
And here are the four of us, with our Kurken pets.
They really need to give Horde and Alliance more emotes in common - I would have loved to ask them to line up so I could get a better shot of their characters.

And in that last shot you can see one of the hunters hearthing back to Shattrath. Only reason I know it was Shattrath - I bumped into her again in the bank.
Just another sign of Beta:
The Kurken model doesn't yet fit inside the pet window.
Yes, this is the kind of thing that amuses me.
I didn't really get much chance to play with the Kurken (I haven't renamed him yet) thanks to the server going down every 15 minutes. Someone told me that one of the Death Knight spells was bugged and since everyone had to keep testing it (no sarcasm there, it's the only way to tell), the server kept crashing.
The one thing I did find was that the frosty aura around the Kurken isn't something that bothers me. The clouds or aura or smoke or whatever you want to call what trails after the pet are mostly transparent or faintly white, and are hardly noticable. I point this out because - after watching
BigRedKitty's movie with the neon green corehound - well, my thought is that I'd get tired of that glowing aura all over the place. But then, that may just be me. Kurken's Lava Breath fire attack looks the same color of orange flame as the green corehound's, so no difference there.
Meanwhile with this pet I've filled all my stable slots, plus one. Currently my pets are
Viscera, the beloved level 70 flamingo
Necrosis, armored pig stalled at level 66 some time ago
and these from the Beta:
Toho, the devilsaur (level 65)
Cupcake, the rhino (level 70)
SoonToBeNamed, the Kurken/core hound (level 65)
BigRedKitty said it recently - we actually need
more stable slots! Must keep the flamingo - no need to go into that. (See sidebar to your right under Flamingo if you're new here.) I have to hang onto my pig - because after the upcoming patch (new class changes are in it) I want to see how his aggro reacts and how quickly he'll level. And then, I am sentimental about him - he was the first pet I saw others with and wanted, and asked around til I found where to get him (back in the day when there weren't any searchable websites for this info). And he's my oldest pet, so he's grandfathered in as a keeper.

"Once upon a time, when you were just a little pig..."
From what I've tamed so far I only know the choice is going to be VERY difficult. I want a devilsaur so I can relive all the Godzilla movies I adore - and giant dinosaurs stomping through a city is something I can't resist. I already
gushed over the rhino, so I want that one too. And the Kurken, well, I do love that whole zone of his. (Not to mention the fact that the questgiver makes you
Kurkenstoks!) Oh and the fact that he's the same model as the
Lunar Festival quest monster - that makes me love him even more. But to choose - well, I feel could manage to release the Kurken, but I'd miss the rhino and the devilsaur too much to give them up. Problem is, those were never pets I'd planned to tame.
See, I thought I was going to have to decide between a
Sporebat and a
Nether Ray (can't decide what color). I've always liked them for their alien look (sporebat gushing
here at the end) and nice animation. So I'd thought this would be a great time, with the new pet talents, for me to decide on which I'd prefer. Not to mention both of them seem to have
interesting skills in the beta, so I do plan to try them out. Haven't gotten around to trying any of the pets in the Cunning family yet. Because I got sidetracked by the devilsaur taming, and then, well...
Now I have NO idea which 5 I'm going to settle on.
This is going to be VERY difficult.
Have I mentioned that yet?
Even if you're not in the Beta - you'll need all the time you have to start planning!
Oh and here's something I have noticed for you pvp folk. Look through the
list of pet skills. Now notice that there are several pets that specifically have a skill that will be wonderful against casters. Now imagine if two or more hunters were to do the battlegrounds together, and were to coordinate their pet choices so they would have a range of anti caster abilities. (Core hound, nether ray, rhino for example.)
Yes, my priest is SO going to be toast.
Ah well. It'll be a fun death anyhow.
And it's going to either be hunters or Death Knights mowing me down, so I'll at least be able to enjoy the show!
And it's some consolation that wasps might be a real burden for rogues.
...Oh and I really do mean to start playing my priest and stop allowing this hunter lovefest to suck me into only playing one class! Really!
