Vargul Blighthound Sightings! And Yes, It IS Tamable! - 2008-12-05 19:59:37
<<< Previous - What All the Fashionable Gnome Vikings Will Be Wearing | Next - Countdown for the Winter Veil Presents >>>Since this is a Hunter Pet Entry it's the perfect time to stop before reveling in the pet info and say - Happy Birthday Mania, and thanks again for the fun that is Petopia and your blog!
I know that every time I see a hunter with a
Blighthound go by I always stop and look. And I think "someday when my hunter's level 74, I'm going to get one of those." I say it (to myself) in the way that some people say "wow, that
'58 Corvette is a lovely vehicle, I'd love to drive that!" Luckily hunter pets are a lot less expensive. And don't require insurance.
I know there are others of you out there oogling this pet - because some of you are drifting through from the search engines, trying to figure out what the heck that pet was that you saw run past you. "What
was that demonlike dog creature with the flaming legs? Is that a hunter pet?!" So I figure it's time to see about answering some of the questions, even though my hunter's only level 72 and it'll be two long levels before I can go tame one of these fellows.
First - for those who haven't seen it - this is what the
Vargul Blighthound looks like:
He's hanging out with his owner in the Bank of Ogrimmar. Note the white cloud of breath that comes out of his mouth. I think I'm fascinated by the Blighthounds for their markings and the Halloweenish coloring. Part of the fun of taming one will be to get a really close look at one without being involved in a fight to the death.
Here's a slightly closer look:
I'm usually only able to get shots of this fellow in banks or auction houses. "In the wild" the hunters usually move too quickly or are in the process of rapidly mounting up and moving on - so it's hard to get a better shot.
Some folks may find the Blighthound homely, some of you will also be fascinated. But before I go on to other screenshots, let's go over some details about the pet.
Name: Vargul Blighthound
Classified as: a Wolf, Ferocity Pet
Location: Zul'Drak
Levels in the wild: 74-75
Important: This is NOT an exotic pet. You do NOT need to be a Beastmaster hunter to tame this. Despite the amazing skin on this fellow, he's not an exotic.

Now let me cover something that may be confusing people.
This is a
Scourge Plaguehound:
These particular shots were taken in the beta, but the plaguehounds are found in the same area in game today. This plaguehound is level 54 or 55 and is found in
The Scarlet Enclave, the starting area for the Death Knights. And the plaguehound is a
demon and is therefore
NOT tamable by hunters. I'm not sure that other classes can get into the Scarlet Enclave anyway - but even if it is possible, no dice, you can't tame demons.
Though a warlock could enslave one of course.
So the Vargul Blighthound look exactly like these plaguehounds - they're the same skin - only the Blighthounds are wolves instead of demons. We're not going question how this happened lorewise - it's one of those things you rejoice over and then quickly do the taming before someone at Blizz changes their minds.
Another demon with a similar skin, only in blue, is the
Beryl Hound:
Sadly this one is dead, because that's the easiest way to get a good screenshot of it. They seem to want to chew off my face if they're still alive. And like the Plaguehound, the Beryl Hounds are also
not tamable.
Just so we're all clear on what our options are!
Now I just need to get my hunter to 74. I'll let you know when I actually get around to taming one myself! Meanwhile I'll see about scouting out the area where the blighthounds roam in a future post. Another thing I need to look into is the Wowhead comment that the blighthound's
running animation is more of a walk, which makes the pet very slow. (I think I've read something similar about the running animation at
Mania's Forums.) Maybe that'll change/be patched by the time I get out to Zul'Drak.
If any of you Blighthound owners have any information to share, please leave comments or suggest other links!
