Terokkar Has Some Odd Helm Crafters: Get Your Own Wolf Hat - 2008-04-17 06:51:12
<<< Previous - The Art of Raid Icon Chat | Next - Non Combat Pets and Papa Hummel's Old-Fashioned Pet Biscuit >>>Here's Ratshag in his new helm, otherwise known as
The Helm of Lupine Cunning. Happy news - you too can have one of these helms as soon as you get your character to
Terokkar Forest and do a short chain of quests, available to both Alliance and Horde. And your character can have a similar helm in cloth, leather, mail or plate, so there's an option that will work for everyone. Click the link above to see Ratshag the dwarf in his helm - and here is what my gnome warrior looks like in hers:
I admit it, I created a gnome warrior for the sole purpose of wearing silly armor. And this gear would rank pretty high up there on the humor scale. I would actually bet that most people wouldn't be able to watch this gnome attack and kill something wearing that helm and those fist weapons and maintain a straight face. (Though the squeaky "hi-ya!" sounds she makes while fighting annoy me like crazy at this point.) Meanwhile Ratshag may win the "who looks sillier" comparison - the helm plus a beard? Heh...
Meanwhile, you have to look a bit differently at the "nice" folk in Terokkar who hand you this as a reward and wonder if they have a large stack of wolves' heads in their basement and this is some way of disguising a really strange mass killing spree. That perhaps you're some part of. Hmmm, perhaps it's best not to dwell on that.
So, how to get that particular helm? I'm going to give the quests for both factions but confess - I've only gotten my Alliance characters to the Outland, so I'm not sure about the information for the Horde. Hop in and let me know if I need to change or add anything. Also I've used the words wolf and worg interchangably, which is probably wrong, but it's easy to confuse the two.
...Alliance Chain...
Quest 1: Timber Worg Tails
Level 64 quest, Requires level 62
Questgiver:
Bertelm at the Allerian Stronghold
It's your basic "kill beasts, bring back parts" quest - you'll be trying to get 12 Timber Worg Tails. Which is odd, because the helm is made from a head - maybe someone sneaks behind you to remove the heads after you leave the bodies. Which of course wouldn't work if you're a skinner - but we won't delve any deeper into what's already the improbable, ok?
The drop rate is insanely slow on this quest so be prepared to have this take a long time. I'd recommend taking the other quests mentioned in the
comments here so you can multitask. A crucial tip - try focusing on killing the Timber Worg Alphas as they seem to drop the tails most often. Turn in the quest to Bertelm and pick up...
Quest 2: The Elusive Ironjaw
Level 64 quest, Requires level 62
Questgiver: Bertelm at the Allerian Stronghold
Kill
Ironjaw, a large brownish grey wolf, level 63 or 64 (websites have different levels). He paths around coordinates
69, 33 and
62, 35. Respawn is fairly quick so if you see someone else kill him or find his body just hang around the area killing other beasties and wait a bit. Return to Bertelm and choose your helm.
...Horde Chain...
Quest 1: Vestments of the Wolf Spirit
Level 64 quest, Requires level 62
Questgiver:
Malukaz at Stonebreaker Hold
Malukaz wants you to bring him 12 Timber Worg Pelts. Wonder if he and Bertelm are somehow working together in this. Oh sure, Bert may say he's working on trim for a cloak and Malukaz may say he wants the pelts for a ritual...but I'm thinking there's a wolf helm crafting den around the place somewhere, turning out masses of these things.
Unlike the Alliance quest, comments on quest websites seem to indicate that killing the regular Timber Worgs rather than the Alphas may get you a better drop rate on pelts. Return to Malukaz and turn in the quest to get the next step...
Quest 2: Patriarch Ironjaw
Level 64 quest, Requires level 62
Questgiver: Malukaz at Stonebreaker Hold
You'll be killing the same named wolf as Alliance - but the difference here is that when you return to Malukaz he tells you that he's personally crafted the helm he's giving you. Nice touch, that. Bert's just using the tails to create a cloak for himself and then apparently your helm just appears. Or maybe the real story is that Bert's not good at making up background information. Meanwhile I'm still going with my theory that Bert and Malukaz are in this together. It's just obvious that Malukaz is the better storyteller.
Here's another difference in the two chains - the Horde quest has a third part...
Quest 3: Welcoming the Wolf Spirit
Level 64 quest, Requires level 62
Questgiver: Malukaz at Stonebreaker Hold
From the quest text:
Use the Ceremonial Incense near the candles in Malukaz's hut and observe the ceremony. When the ceremony is complete, speak with Malukaz again.
Ceremonial Incense (Provided)
Description:
I've nearly completed the vestments that I'll wear during the ceremony. As I add the finishing touches, I'd like you to set this incense by the candles near the runestone to my left.
I believe it will help us to attract the wolf spirit's attention, since it was made in the days of the orcish clans. I can almost imagine my ancestors using it in a ceremony paying tribute to the wolf spirit after a successful hunt.
Once you've placed the incense, I'll begin the ceremony.
Basically you stand with the questgiver, a wolf spirit comes, and then the quest completes. Which is a great ending to the quest, I think. I no longer think that Bert and Malukaz are just conspirators - I think Malukaz is the Godfather of the Ring of Wolf Helm Crafters, a shadow organization of lore, magic and recycling of wolf parts. A far more important character than everyone realizes. Bert's one of his followers, but Malukaz is the one in charge.
Someday I
must get one of my Horde characters to the Outlands.
Want a chance at a wolf helm at a lower level? There are several others in the game.
If you kill
Gahz'rilla for the
Carrot on a Stick trinket (and get that speed boost for your mount) you'll have a chance at seeing
Embrace of the Lycan (level 45 leather helm).
Leatherworkers can make the
Wolfshead Helm (level 40 leather helm), an item with nice bonuses for a druid. (My druid had this ages ago, and I only just now remembered this. Ah, nostalgia...)
If you make it to 70 and still love that look, but want it in an epic - try for the
Big Bad Wolf's Head (level 70 mail helm) which may drop from him - once he's dead of course - in the
Opera event in
Karazhan.
If there are other helms I'm missing, let me know.
When you equip this helm you'll have to decide whether to actually show youself wearing it or keep it hidden. In my case it was fun to see on my gnome, but looked kinda creepy when I got it for my hunter with her giant night elf antenna-ears sticking out the back. But after you upgrade to another helm - and you will - you'll definitely want to stick this in your bank and
save it for next October. Remember, werewolves are always popular at that time of year.
