How to Join the Furbolg Army - 2008-03-10 02:01:57
<<< Previous - Why Hooha Became A Gaming Blog | Next - Taming Mazzranache: Why I Needed a Pink Flamingo Pet >>>

First I must apologize to all the Horde folk. Sorry, this is an Alliance only quest. I too think this is unfair, but after all there are tons of cool Horde quests out there. And playing an Undead is fun in general, not to mention the joy of being a Tauren. So don't begrudge your Alliance friends their furblog form. Horde gets all the cooler dances anyhow, so you can always retaliate that way.

This particular quest is often ignored because:
1) Ashenvale has a lot of dull quests and this seems like just another one,
2) the quest chain goes on a long time, and
3) many of the locations are hard to find.
The quest reward is really a choice of various weapons but those in the know will stop this quest as soon as they reach the best reward - Dartol's Rod of Transformation - a wand that allows you to turn into a furbolg. This disguise ability isn't something you can use to fool npcs outside of this quest chain (I've tried, trust me - other furbolgs are not fooled). However it is something humorous that you won't be able to do again in the game. And when a group of people have it and all use it at once the result is a Furbolg Army. Seeing one run through a city is something that, I think anyway, brings a little humor to everyone in the game.

Why? Have you ever seen a furbolg?

Furbolg Attempting Aldor Rep
This Furbolg is working on its Aldor rep.

Yes it's a bear in a thong and feathers. With a back problem. You have to go a long way to get something this goofy. (Unless you play a druid.) Personally I'm always completely weirded out by the thong aspect. I really want to know what developer sat down to design a creature and after sketching out a furbolg said to him/herself, "hmmm, it's missing something....I know! I'll have it wear a thong!" It's the kind of thing I'm always wanting to ask at Blizzcon but really afraid to find out the answer to. Not to mention the fact that the thong appears to be made of an extremely coarse looking rope. Ugh.

Oh right, I was helping you with the quest, check.
Your character should be at least level 28 if you want to complete the whole thing solo. With help you should be able to do it (up to the shrine part) at level 19.

IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!
Be sure to STOP doing this quest chain when the notes indicate you should. If you complete the chain you will have to hand in the wand to receive the weapon and experience. DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT DO THIS. The weapon and experience are not worth the fun of the wand. If you turn in the wand it's gone forever and you will not be able to join the Furbolg Army of Mayham. And of course, you know you want that, right?

I should add that another reason to do this quest is that it's very possible that someday this quest will have only so many uses of the wand and thus end all the fun. Hope this never happens as the wand gives you harmless fun and no real abilities. But do realize that this is a quest reward possibly not "working as intended" and therefore it could be changed. Before that happens, have some fun with it.

Note: the following is image heavy, but maps and images are definitely needed here.

Quest text is from Thottbot.com so it may not all be correct.

Also - once you have accepted quests in this chain open your quest log and double check that you have the quest. There have been some problems with accepting the quest and then not having it show up in your Quest Log. This has happened more than once on various characters.

START: The Inn in Astranaar, Ashenvale. Raene gives you the quest.

Raene of Raene's Cleansing

Time to complete: can be as short as 35 minutes if you are 40+ and have a mount. Much of the time is spent in traveling.
Having a coordinates mod will make all of this much easier.

......PART 1......

Raene's Cleansing
Level 19 Ashenvale
Obtained at level 18 Alliance
Find Teronis in Ashenvale.
(Your Name), a longtime friend of mine is also aiding the Sentinels here in Ashenvale, but he has yet to return. He had leads on finding an item that he thought could slow the furbolg attacks on our people--a rod created by a now-dead, evil wizard. Before he left here, he mentioned seeking out a gem for the rod. He mentioned the gem possibly being hidden at the shrine in Lake Falathim at the base of the mountain to the west. The gem was being held there before it was overrun.
Find my friend, (Your Name), please.

Lake Falathim on your Map

Your Destination: Scenic Lake Falathim
Scenic Lake Falathim (Actually sort of small for a lake...)

Directions:
Leave Astranaar and go west, toward ocean.
When you get to Maestra's Post take a left and off road it west.
Look for a lake to your left.
Teronis's body is at 20, 43 - on an island in Lake Falathim. Click the body to loot, this will give you a journal to read and do so if you have time to get into the lore.

Finding Teronis
With a recent path Teronis now has a ? over his body - you can't miss him.

......PART 2......

Looting the body gives you a quest to find a gemstone - just kill murlocs around you for this. The gem is a random drop from a murloc - I had to kill about 25 to get the drop, but I think it's been decreased a bit. If you are grouped while doing the quest then everyone should be able to loot the murloc for the gem.

Time to Kill Murlocs!

Return to Raene to turn in quest.

......PART 3......

Level 21 Ashenvale
Obtained at level 18 Alliance
Find Shael'dryn at the moonwell to the northeast.
Glowing Gem: 0/1
You'll have to do the research yourself, but from what notes Teronis has made, it sounds like your next course of action is to find the other pieces of the rod Dartol created. I would start by heading to the moonwell east of Iris Lake. When you're ready, follow the road and turn north when you reach a small sitting area on your left. A dryad there named Shael'dryn is better suited to guide you. Seek her out. Keep the gem with you--Shael'dryn will need it if she's to help you recreate the rod.

The Road To Shael'dryn

The moonwell is at 53, 46 - Shael'dryn is beside it.

Directions:
Take main road east (away from Astranaar).
Take left off main road at bench with book and columns.
Go north til you see lanterns along a path (to your left).
Follow lanterns, turn right see archway - through it is moonwell
Only critters to worry on this route are lvl 22 bears.

Shael'drynon the Map

Look for the Lantern Path
The Lantern Path - and the annoying bears that lurk there.

Through the Gate
At the end of the Lantern Path you'll find this gate - and through the gate...

Through the Archway is Shael'dryn
Shael'dryn is waiting to help.

And while we're visiting Shael'dryn...
And while we're visiting Shael'dryn...
Let's try to figure out what in the heck she is. Apparently she's called a dryad - but I think she's some kind of centaur with deer legs and body. And a freaky fashion sense - what is with those ankle bracelets? Not at all what I've come to expect dryads to look like.

......PART 4......

Level 27 Ashenvale
Obtained at level 18 Alliance
Find the Wooden Key and a piece of Dartol's Rod before returning to Shael'dryn at the moonwell.
Iron Shaft: 0/1
I wish your tidings were better.
Raene is correct, I know about Dartol's creation and the treants in the area--at least I did once. They've become corrupted now, their nature twisted. If your goal is to find the next piece of the rod, then you'll have to find the key to open the chest it's in. The wooden key is on one of the treants northeast of here, near Felwood. Once you have it, look for a small glade west of the road near the Felwood border... the chest should be hidden around there.

Directions:
Take main road east (away from Astranaar).
Turn left at road to Felwood, ride north.

Take the Road to Felwood
Turn left here.

The Chest Location on Your Map

But Not All the Way to Felwood - Stop Here
But don't go all the way to Felwood - stop here - when you look to your left and see an area with columns - around 55, 35.

Stand Still...Now Face Left
Stand Still...Now Face Left
(Bonus pop cultural points if you now start humming REM.)

Kill any Crazed or Withered Ancients - around lvl 27-28 - one will drop a wooden key. This is usually a very quick drop.

The Chest

Chest is at 54, 35 - open it and get the Iron Shaft (insert joke of choice here, bonus points if it involves Richard Roundtree). And now return to Shael'dryn.

......PART 5......

Level 28 Ashenvale
Obtained at level 18 Alliance
Find the final piece of Dartol's Rod and return to Shael'dryn at the moonwell.
Iron Pommel: 0/1
The final piece of the rod was given to the druids of Dor'danil for safekeeping. I have no idea where they hid it. I'm sorry I can't help you more than that. All I can tell you is to follow the road that leads towards the Barrens. The druids took shelter to the east of that road, but they won't be of much help to you: they were killed recently... it's something I don't like to think about much. When you find the final piece, bring it to me and I will help you reconstruct the rod.

Now to Hunt Some Slime

Directions:
Take main road east (away from Astranaar).
Turn right onto the road to the Barrens, head south until about 67,76. This is before you reach Barrens - you're still in Ashenvale.

Stop on road...
Stop and take a right off the road, going to your east.
Watch our for Horde npcs somewhere around here - I'm not sure but I think they're part of a quest - I never got around to this area much on my Horde characters.

Kill any Rotting Slime (level 20-21) until a box drops, which should happen in only one or two kills. Very quick drop rate, usually. Drop zone is around 70,75, but I have also heard that it will drop around 69,82.

Dead Slime and Box
In box is Iron Pommel - take it and return to Shael'dryn.

Shael'dryn will chat with you a bit before she offers the next quest. Wait until she's silent - she will go on and on for a while - then click her to get next quest.

......PART 6......

Level 28 Ashenvale
Obtained at level 18
Find the hidden shrine and re-enchant Dartol's Rod.
Reconstructed Rod: 0/1
Here is the completed rod, . Reconstructing it was simple... it's finding the shrine that has the power to recharge it that will be the hard part. With some focus and effort it shouldn't be too hard for someone like you, who's already accomplished so much. Head southeast of here--there are very few paths, so be careful--and keep your eyes to the north. The shrine is hidden within the mountains that surround this glade.
Once there, place the rod within the shrine... the rest is magic. Hehe.

Finding the shrine is fairly annoying in that it depends on you finding the path that leads to it. The path is of dark brown/black dirt and has some grass growing in it - in other words very much like any other area with dirt in the whole section. Coordinates are the best way to find it. Prepare to be annoyed a little, to back track some, and to end up killing more bears than you'd planned.

First You Must Find the Path

Vague Directions:
At the start of the path with lanterns (assuming you are coming from Shael'dryn's moonwell and returned to the first lantern on that path) go left (east). There will be valley to your left - turn left into it - you are now going north.

The path starts at around 55, 51 - earth of path has grass on it but is slightly blackish. Frankly you're not going to be sure that you're actually on the path.

The Path ToThe Shrine

Path is not straight, but you will know you're on the right track when it starts to wind upwards along a hill.
Bears lvl 21-22 are all over and will stupidly aggro on even lvl 70s.

Shrine itself is at 56, 49

The Shrine on the Map

Click shrine to finish quest and receive your wand.
Accept the next part of the quest to see nice light effects.

At last, the Shrine!

At this point you can turn it in to Shael'dryn and then to Raene if you need about 40 or 50 pts toward Darnassus rep. The quest afterwards has you use the disguise to chat with a furbolg - read about it here on Thottbot. Or Wowhead.
Otherwise just abandon the quest and keep your wand.

If you do go further on the chain remember - do NOT do the final turn in because you will lose the wand!
Also you will discover that you still have Teronis' journal - but you can get rid of it (people are always asking me about that), it's of no use unless you feel like reading it. Actually it now contains a lot more text and really explains what's going on in the quest, which is a nice touch. Thank you, developers, for your epic coding.

Furblog Visiting Shattrath

Now that you have your furbolg form, what to do with it? Well, it's always a surprise for people to see a furbolg in the outlands. Ad if you have a couple of friends, or perhaps a whole guild turn into furbolg and run around....

Furbolg Invasion of Area 52

Well, you can see the amusement factor. I think we managed to get a lvl 15 furbolg to Area 52 on that run.

Please feel free to leave comments, tips, or any easier explanation on how to find the Shrine in the last step - it was almost impossible to describe.

Enjoy, and welcome to the Furbolg Army.

Comments:

The Shrine is almost impossible to find, so small wonder it's almost impossible to give directions to it. :)

Oh God! I remember trying to find that shrine - blooming nightmare!

Actually, you can turn in all of the quests up until the final quest in the chain where you actually turn it in permanently to Raene. This is AFTER you use the rod to speak to Krolg the Furbolg.

See http://thottbot.com/?s=Raene's+Cleansing

After you turn in the quest to kill Ran Bloodtooth, don't pick up the final quest.

If you do accidentally pick up the final quest, you CAN drop it which will "destroy" the rod (Don't worry you CAN get it back!)
Just go talk to Raene and tell her that you lost the rod and she will scold you and give you the rod that someone found discarded in the forest.

I wonder if that would work if you somehow find your wand accidentally destroyed. I've had people tell me that they've had the wand disappear from their bag, but wasn't something they did purposefully. I've told them to go back and talk to Raene to see if she'll replace it - not sure if that will work in every case though.

Thanks for the further info, Marc!
